Having Swedish ancestors has always made me interested in the history of the Vikings. Sigurd Aase, who is the owner of Viking Kings A/S is behind the project of the largest Viking Ship in modern times, the Draken Harald HÃ¥rfagre. The plan is to sail the ship from Haugesund, Norway to Newfoundland going to Iceland and Greenland on the way. The journey will begin May 2016.
They’re looking for volunteers to man the crew on the ship. You can apply online until February 2016. Now before you volunteer, you should know that this is an open ship. There is no under deck and only a small area that is covered. You can sleep under a tent cover with 15 other crew members every 4 hours – the shifts are 4 hours on and 4 hours off.
You should also have some sort of skill that would be beneficial on the ship and be able to devote at least two months to the trek. Having long, flowing red hair and a beard probably will help your chances.
This video shows what life would be like on the ship.
So if you think you have what it takes to spend months on the open sea in an open boat cruising from Norway to Newfoundland, hurry and apply before all the slots are taken.
